Week 1 - Going shopping and cost of a plant-based diet
Time to go shopping!
On my previous post I described how I created a meal plan for myself, new vegan, and my family, who are not vegan. Today my family and I go shopping for the ingredients in my list...
So here we go!

Armed with my shopping list, I ventured forth with my family to the local supermarket.
Where previously I would buy 1 vegetable for each day, random bags of fruit which are on sale, and 3 packets of meat or fish, here I was now buying 6 servings of veg and 3 servings of fruit per person per day!!!
By the end of the fruit and vegetable isles, you may not be surprised to find out that my shopping trolley was already PACKED FULL! Not only that, I almost had a heard attack as I saw the total bill I managed to accumulate thus far already!
We then scattered about the rest of the supermarket to find the remaining items, stopped at the frozen isle, paid for our shopping, and VOILA... SHOPPING COMPLETE!
Before this week, we would usually spend about 40-60 pounds a week for our supermarket shopping. On top of this we usually buy items such as canned foods, nuts, maple syrup, and coffee from a wholesale.
This week we spent ......... (drum roll)
A total of:
£ 51.82
And this is EXCLUDING pantry items which I already had at home!
And of course the chicken, minced beef, and cow's milk are also excluded. This turned out to be more expensive than I had imagined.By the end of the week I will add on the cost of the things I use which I already had stocked, such as oats, beans, and nuts.
Time to go home...
We face our second challenge when attempting to unload our shopping and fill the fridge. If you think your fridge is big... then try buying 8 packets of spinach or kale and attempt to fit them into the fridge! After moving things around, a lot of shoving thing in, and leaving things to be used in the next couple of days out, we finally managed to fit everything in the fridge!
Thank you joining me on my first vegan shopping adventure.
My next posts will be focused on my day-to-day cooking experience, where I will record the amount of time it take to prep and cook the meals included in my first week's plans. I also hope to share some recipes with you all as well.
In the meantime, please feel free to comment and let me know what content you would be interested in seeing!
Until next time,
Brad
